This is the second book in the series and can be read as a standalone. The H/h romance is complete in each book with investigative plots that are unique, but the characters evolve and crossover from previous stories. Coast Guard Investigator Rissi Dawson is a talented profiler and Coast Guard Investigator Mason Rogers is an expert diver. They are sent as partners to investigate the death of an off-shore oil rig worker. Everyone on the rig is on edge because of previous accidents, the death of their coworker and the rumor of Henry’s Curse. Rissi and Mason also find that there is a ship of environmental activists in the area which is antagonistic towards the oil rig. They are studying migrating manta rays and have vowed to stop the oil rig from destroying the sea. As evidence mounts, the death of the oil rig crewman looks more like murder. Are the activists willing to go as far as murder to get rid of the oil rig or was it a member from his own crew? Rissi and Mason work their way through the suspects as they also deal with their connection from the past. I loved that this story took off right from the first chapter and continued at a fast pace in both suspense and romance plots. Rissi and Mason were perfect together and when they reminisced about their shared childhood experiences in the children’s home, it was heartbreaking. I believe this is the first time I have read about Coast Guard Investigators and the author did an excellent job of research and making them come to life. The characters and the plot were believable and realistic with a good balance between the suspense and romance. The characters do pray and express their faith throughout the book, but it is never excessive and is expressed naturally. I thoroughly enjoyed this H/h, all the team members and the suspense plot kept me guessing right up to ‘The End’. I now want to go back and read the first book in the series. I hope there are many more Coastal Guardian books to come.

Another great read from Dani Pettrey. In this one, we get to spend time with many characters from other books, while also delving into the growing relationship between old friends Rissi and Mason. One of God’s great constants.” The Crushing Depths, the second installment in Dani Pettrey’s Coastal Guardians series, is an action-packed romantic suspense novel that will keep readers guessing until the very end. Dani Pettrey consistently writes fabulous faith-filled romantic suspense novels filled with wonderful characters, surprising plot twists, and a perfect amount of romance. Readers will be reunited with their favorite Coast Guard Investigative Service team members in this novel, and with the addition of CGIS agent Mason Rogers, the team is now complete. Childhood friends Rissi Dawson and Mason Rogers haven’t seen each other in 10 years until Mason joins the CGIS team. Chemistry and attraction from their youth carry over to present day as Mason and Rissi work together to solve a mysterious death on an oil rig. Personally, I love a lot of romance in my suspense and Dani Pettrey delivers perfectly. The scenes between Mason and Rissi are some of my favorites in the novel and their history together as children makes their relationship bonds even stronger. There are many new minor characters introduced throughout the novel who play a role in the investigations, so readers will need to keep those characters straight as the number of suspects increases. The Crushing Depths is highly recommended for readers of romantic suspense, especially those who enjoy books by authors such as Lynette Eason, Lynn H. Blackburn, and Irene Hannon. Readers will be eagerly anticipating the third book in the series to discover more about their favorite members of the Coast Guard Investigative Service team. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine. “He’d dreamt of this moment more times than he could count and now that it was here, he didn’t want to rush a thing. After a decade, he was finally kissing the woman he loved.”

There is some unrequited love here, but maybe there is a spark from someone else? Actually, there is a third case of maybe a match, you will have to read and see? 'She wouldn't let fear stop her.' I've been reading Dani Pettrey a long time and she definitely knows how to write suspense. This is her second in her Coastal Guardians series and it is just fascinating! The Crushing Depths had my heart racing and my eyes glued to the pages! I enjoyed reading Rissi and Mason’s story as it progressed, and the camaraderie between all members of the team were one of my favourite parts to read. I found the second book of the series a lot easier to follow than the first book, even with the large cast of characters. The mysteries (there were two suspense stories) kept me intrigued, and the addition of a sea legend added extra chills. I did feel like the ending of both mysteries were wrapped up too quickly, but they were definitely unexpected. Already excited for the next one!

The Crushing Depths is the second book in the Coastal Guardian series. This series follows a team of Coast Guard Investigators as they seek justice. This series follows a team of Coast Guard Investigators as they seek justice. Action, tension, mystery and romance create a compelling story. A death on an oil rig seems like an unfortunate accident, but Coast Guard are called to investigate the details of what happened. Investigators Rissi and Mason are flown to the rig, but their helicopter crashes on its way. Both investigators are fortunate to survive and even more determined to find out what is going on. Their investigation leads them to consider the rising tension between the rig crew and a group of environmental protestors and rumours of a curse that has the men on edge. Book two in this Coastal Guardians series follows Rissi Dawson and Mason Rogers. Rissi and Mason were childhood friends. They both resided in a children’s home, following the breakdown of their own families. They both suffered horrific trauma and abuse in that children’s home. They were each the other’s support system. They were separated and only found each other recently. Working together gives them a chance to reconnect, but it is quickly clear to both of them that their past ties them together and their feelings run far deeper than friendship. Alongside their deepening feelings, both Mason and Rissi must face the hurts of their past. Flashbacks give the reader some insight into the trauma they faced. It gives a solid background to their romance and justifies why their feelings deepen so quickly. Readers of book one will recognise the tight CGIS team that form the background of this series. While each book can be read as a complete and separate story, the backstory and romantic relationships of the characters overlap. While Rissi and Mason are the main characters, their team all partake in the investigation and some chapters are written from the perspective of other characters. Noah, leader of the group, features, and his growing feelings and protection of a Coast Guard Medic seems set to feature in the next book. All these story threads gives the book a family feel and I loved the teasing between the team and the support they give each other. The mystery and investigation is exciting. From the initial explosion to the helicopter crash, the beginning is as exciting as the conclusion. The publishers provided an advanced readers copy of this book for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own.

This book starts off with a bang and keeps right on going! I was hooked right from the first chapter! Dani Pettrey never disappoints when it comes to suspense. We all face moments in life where we just don't understand why things are happening to us, or even if any good will ever come from it. But God is always in control when evil is running rampant and the world is spinning out of control. He is the healer of broken hearts and shattered lives. There is nothing that He cannot put back together.

This one had me at “just one more chapter tonight... no, one more...” several nights. It is action-packed and full of intrigue. I really liked both Rissi and Mason. Their backstory just made my heart go out to them. And honestly, I love stories of reunion after separation. But poor Caleb! He acted very manly and I applaud the character. And, as always, the foundation is very well laid for the next book. I want Noah’s story! I personally didn’t find this one super suspenseful. There were definitely gripping scenes and a complex mystery. I loved that aspect of it. Now for the romance. The book finished and I was like, “Wait, this was only a week?” The romance progressed rapidly with several kisses and a whole load of feelings. It was sweet in ways, yes; I’m just not a big romance fan. With a part of the story being on an oil rig, there ended up being a lot of talk about different men sleeping with others’ girls and so on. I would not recommend this to conservative readers under 18 because of the topics covered. The spiritual thread was stronger toward the end. The characters didn’t hide their trust in God and prayed frequently. It wasn’t so much how often they talked about God as it was they lived the Christian life in everyday living, which I appreciate. Like with the last book, there were a lot of characters to keep track of, which was tricky as I read this primarily when really tired. I think it was a little easier this time around because I had been introduced to the crew in book one, but there were still a few times I was a little lost. Can’t wait for book three! *I received this book from the publisher and happily provided my honest review*

"Living in the past only gives people who've hurt you more power over you. It's best to forget them and move forward, never looking back." It's another winner from Dani Pettrey. In this book, there is also a secondary plot of suspense and mystery which is completely separate from the main plot but works nicely to introduce Brooke, whom I'm assuming we'll see more of in the future. I recommend that you read The Killing Tide first before reading this second novel in the series since the cast of characters in this Coast Guard Investigative Service office is large but every character is unique and worth getting to know. Rissi and Mason share a haunted past of surviving traumatic childhoods in a group home for orphans. Now Rissi is a master profiler and has become a strong, independent, determined woman of faith who is excellent at her work. Mason is a diving expert who has just joined Rissi's team and their unspoken young love for each other from their teenage years blossoms into something deeper and more meaningful. As they reconnect, they are also thrust into a volatile situation between an environmentalist group and an oil company when unexplained mechanical failures and untimely deaths on an oil rig call for CGIS to investigate. While this is happening out at sea, a Coast Guard medic Brooke is targeted in her home and Noah works to protect her and catch the one responsible. Both of the plots have plenty of surprises that will have you scratching your head one minute and gasping in realization in the next. This book is also a nice set up for the next books in the series; it delved a bit more into Logan and Emmy's workplace friendship and introduced another character who may be a possible match for Caleb....but that remains to be seen. If you enjoy romantic suspense, Dani Pettrey will thrill your suspense-seeking soul with this series. I received a copy of the book from Bethany House Publishing via Celebrate Lit Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

The Crushing Depths is book number two in Dani Pettrey's Coastal Guardians series. While the lead up to this story is introduced in book one, and you'll get to know the team a little bit better reading it first, I do believe this could be enjoyed as a standalone as well. To be honest, I was iffy on the first book in this series. Though I'd looked forward to reading it since its release, it just fell a bit short for me. To be honest, I was iffy on the first book in this series. Though I'd looked forward to reading it since its release, it just fell a bit short for me. Still, I felt that more than anything it truly was the lead character that I didn't seem to connect with. I had appreciated the brief portions in that book that gave Rissi's perspective, so I wanted to give the series another shot with this book--- which did focus mostly on Rissi and Mason. The verdict? It was definitely worth the second chance. I could not put this one down. The romance between Rissi and Mason was sweet. They had known each other as teenagers and lost touch. At the end of book one, we leave off as the two are being reunited after all those years. In The Crushing Depths, it picks right up where that one left off. While they were strictly friends when they were younger, there were always deeper feelings there. Coming back together, they find that time has done nothing to dull those feelings. I love a good second chance romance, and this one was truly fantastic. I found myself wanting to read even more of their backstory. Still, as much as I enjoyed the romance, the suspense is definitely the highlight of this book. From the start, there was back to back action and mayhem. It kept me guessing not only what would happen next, but also how it all tied together. There were many viable suspects given throughout the story, which certainly kept you guessing as well. While it seems as though it can be assumed who the ultimate bad guy in the story is fairly early on, there were definitely some unexpected twists thrown in there that kept things interesting. At the end, I did feel like I had a few questions left unanswered, however I also feel like throughout this story, we were also set up for things to come in future books, so perhaps those will be answered there. Overall, this was a great read and I am so glad that I gave the series another chance. It is definitely one that fans of Christian romantic suspense will want to check out, and I for one cannot wait to see what comes next. **I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley. All thoughts are 100% my own.

The Crushing Depths, by Dani Pettrey, is a genuine page-turner! This second book in the Coastal Guardians series offers a thrilling mix of mystery, suspense, action, faith, and romance. They are relatable, likable, smart, and interesting. The engrossing plot is detailed with layers of mystery that are utterly compelling especially as investigative clues and suspect motivations are revealed. Like swelling ocean waves, the themes of adversity, courage, faith, perseverance, and restoration add depth and meaning to a riveting story that uplifts while it entertains. The Crushing Depths is more than a story of romance and suspense. It also shines with an emphasis on friendship and second chances. As the characters grapple with difficult and dangerous events, they move closer to wholeness as they heal from events of their past. Their faith and trust grows stronger as they discover that true security is found in the promises of God and in the love and support of friends. With its integral setting, perceptive characters, and captivating plot, The Crushing Depths easily held my attention page after page. Ms. Pettrey is a talented author with a real gift for writing stories that are hard to put down. The Crushing Depths is a book I can easily recommend to all readers who enjoy clean, suspenseful, romantic fiction, and I am eagerly looking forward to reading the next book in the series! *I was given a copy of this book by the publisher and NetGalley. I have read every one of Pettrey's books and this one continues to show why she is a first-class suspense writer. There are so many things going on yet she brings them all together for a satisfying conclusion. The characters are developed. After a short while, I felt like I knew them. If they were in a room, I'd be able to pick each one out. I loved their team. I can't wait to read more about them, especially Logan and Emmy. They had a unique, spicy competition that promises to be a lot of fun. I have read every one of Pettrey's books and this one continues to show why she is a first-class suspense writer. I'd highly recommend it. Thank you to Bethany House for providing me with a free e-copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

What an intriguing, multi-faceted story! This author does a great job of writing compelling team interactions in her novels, with characters who feel very real to me. I loved the romance between Rissi and Mason. What a history these two had, full of difficulties and trauma from their youth. Knowing what they had both endured as teens, and the bond they developed in the past, made seeing them find each other again even more heartwarming. The investigation into all that was going wrong on the offshore oil rig was fascinating and kept me guessing, as more and more seemed to go wrong. The step by step way that Mason and Rissi worked to uncover the facts felt very realistic to me and I appreciated seeing the way the entire team worked using their individual strengths to follow leads and solve the case. I enjoyed the glimpses into the lives of some of the other team members, making me excited to find out who will be the lead characters in the next book. I received a complimentary copy of this book. The core story of this book was really good. I loved the sting rays, that the Deepwater Horizon was mentioned (I like the movie about the disastrous event on that oil rig), and that Steve Irwin was also mentioned. There are not enough fictional books (especially in Christian fiction) about this branch of the United States military. The fact that there was murder afoot and that it was a journey to discover whodunit made me so happy. I love a good murder mystery! So the chapters flew by pretty quickly just for that reason. I feel like I might not be the right audience for Mrs. Pettrey’s books. I’m not a fan of expletives in Christian books, and this one had a few. It also was emphasized many times that someone used an expletive (curse word) even when the word wasn’t flat-out written into the text. The only correction was “There’s a lady present.” Why is it ever okay for men to use bad language? I’ll never understand that. There are always nicer words to choose from, even to express anger or frustration. And silence is golden in those moments. I was also disappointed that a random sexual affair popped up, as did a “he raped our baby” moment. Neither felt organic to the story at all. It felt like they were only in there for the shock factor. All they served to do for me was make me decide this wasn’t the book for me. There was an awkward and aggressive discussion about a girl named Austin. I’m with the dude: I’ve never met or heard of a girl named Austin before either. This discussion and its aggression did not make sense to me, as that is not typically a unisex name. I’m sure there are some girls named Austin out there, and that’s perfectly fine. Maybe it’s because I’m Texan and grew up learning about Stephen Austin who fought at the Battle of the Alamo. Maybe it’s because I’ve known at least three different boys/men named Austin. But this conversation in this book, while only a small portion of the story, stood out as really awkward to me, and it pulled me away from the story for a while. I’m rating this book three stars because the core was good and I realize I might not be the right reader for this story. I think many other readers will like it. Content: child abuse (mentioned), expletives, replacement expletives, sexual affairs (mentioned), derogatory term, alcohol, tobacco

The Crushing Depths completely blew me away! I loved this book so much! After reading and enjoying the first book (plus all of Pettrey's previous books), I expected this to be a good read...but it was even better than I imagined. There's a whole lot going on in this novel, and from the first pages, the characters are in the thick of it! Mason and Rissi, who have a sad history together as victims of abuse, are reunited in the Coast Guard Investigative Service. They're sent to an oil rig (which is dogged by a group of eco-terrorists) to investigate a death, and from there the suspects and the bodies multiply. Some other plotlines are developing along the way. Some other plotlines are developing along the way. Team leader Noah is investigating crimes against Coast Guard medic Brooke, team members Emmy and Logan are busy with their flirty banter, and Caleb is being friend-zoned but is introduced to a potential love interest. I assume all couples will be featured in future novels. (The main characters of Book 1, Finn and Gabby, remain mostly off-stage in this book.) There are A LOT of characters to keep straight here: the main team, some of their family members, other Coast Guard members, oil company employees, environmental activists, medical examiners, associates of suspects, and more. By the end, I think I had everybody straight, but it did take a bit of concentrated effort and was helped by the fact that I read the first book in the series. The pace is quick, the romance is sweet, the characters as well-developed as they can be at this pace, and the mystery intricate and engrossing. Fans of Christian romantic suspense should love this one.

I was really disappointed in the first book of this series, so I was a little nervous about starting this one. Fortunately, The Crushing Depths was back to the quality I have come to expect from Pettrey. I liked the main characters much more in this installment and enjoyed the mysteries. I wanted to see their relationship develop a little more organically. However, the B plot involved the beginnings of a romance between Noah and Brooke and I felt much more invested in them. I look forward to reading their book in the future. I also feel pretty invested in the inevitable relationship between Emmy and Landon. After the first book I didn't really care about any of the characters and I'm really happy I got to know them better than this time around.

I thoroughly enjoyed this new read from Dani Pettrey. I had been looking forward to Rissi and Mason's story since the first book in the series, "The Killing Tide" and this did not disappoint. We are treated to not only seeing Rissi and Mason's relationship but two mysteries as well. Both of the mysteries are exciting and each of them surely sets up future books for a couple of Rissi and Mason's teammates as well as introducing new characters who I hope we see again. This story had me all in and invested from the very beginning and didn't let up. It's that 'hold on tight because you know this will be a fun ride' feeling. I love when that happens. It's not a great shared history but I enjoyed how their story unfolded and expanded my understanding of their relationship and their connection. Rissi and Mason are both excellent characters and I enjoyed them so much. There is danger, there is intrigue. The mystery is swirling all over in this book making me anxious with anticipation. It was good stuff. There is another developing plot happening between some side characters and I'm hoping they will be in the spotlight for the next book. It's shaping up to be good!! Oh! And as a side note, I never want to be an oil rig worker. Or even visit an oil rig. That's some scary stuff and I'm grateful for the people who do the hard jobs for people like me. This series is about a group of people and they are all present in each book so it would probably help to read this series from the beginning for the best character development, but I honestly think this book can stand on it's own. This book releases on June 30th. Content: peril, death, mild violence, kissing, mentions of physical abuse. Christian fiction. - I received a complimentary copy of this book. I have been waiting for this book for what seems like forever, although it's only been a year. Oh Pettrey pens a great story, full of suspense, action, kissing (swoon!), and characters that you just love being around. She even throws some surprises in every now and then, and I have to admit that I cannot get enough. I knew I was going to devour this book, so it took a lot of strength to force myself to read it slowly. I wanted to savor as much as I could for as long as I could. Rissi and Mason! I knew I was going to devour this book, so it took a lot of strength to force myself to read it slowly. I wanted to savor as much as I could for as long as I could. Rissi and Mason! Yeah they are a fantastic couple. But what I really loved was their backstory. They had a connection unlike any other, and it really touched my heart. Right from the beginning you knew there was something different about these characters, and yes it was emotional to read about their past. But Pettrey reminds readers that God can turn something horrible into something amazing, which is exactly what He did in the lives of Rissi and Mason. Have your tissues ready...you are going to need them. Like with every Pettrey novel, there is the fun game of figuring out the whodunnit. She gives you just enough info to keep you guessing, and then brings a surprise at the end. I loved this just as much as I loved visiting the characters again. There are quite a few to keep track of, so I highly recommend reading book one first to get to know them. But once you do, it's like being amongst old friends. This series is a must read! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
