Edson Arantes do Nascimento, also known as Pele, is a famous Brazilian Football Player. Pele was a humble boy who helped out his family when he became successful. He went on to help children who grew up in poverty, like himself. This is another wonderful addition to the Little People, Big Dreams series and contains lovely illustrations throughout. Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my digital copy.

Written by Isabel Sánchez Vegara it's well written in clear accessible language. The gentle and vibrant illustrations were well done. The art by Camila Rosa is appealing and colorful and supports the story. The illustrations are bold and simple. Well written and appealing, I am really enjoying all of these little books. This one is a worthy addition. I also appreciate that there are suggestions for further reading in the back of the book with the timeline of Pele's life. Four stars. This would make a superlative reading circle book, classroom library book, or gift. Pele is obviously a supremely gifted athlete, but the book also highlights his accomplishments as an ambassador for equality and his charitable works. This book is a tribute to an icon who still represents the ideals of sportsmanship and brotherhood for so many thousands of people worldwide. It's nice to see him being introduced to a new generation of kids. Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

This book tells the story of a small boy, who one day promised his father he'd win the world cup for Brazil and kept his word. Most often, the books from the little people BIG DREAMS series fall into one of two categories for me: 1. never heard of that person before and 2. oh, them. The illustrations are very colourful and fit nicely to the setting. In general, I feel that they always pick the right illustrators so the illustration style compliments the story in every possible way. Another thing I liked was that they avoided telling their readers that football is a thing for boys. The message was: You can do this if you want to! It doesn't matter who you are, where you are born, just try it! Work for it! That's the kind of story I want toddlers to hear. I recieved a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.

Another good addition to this series, which I enjoy. I knew who Pelé was but didn't know his history or the work he did outside of soccer/football. The author included just enough tidbits about his beginning years and what he did beyond sport to show the depth of his story.

Pelé loved football from a young age. He didn’t have a ball, so he made one with things in his home. When young Pelé saw his father cry because Brazil’s team lost the World Cup, Pelé promised his father that he would make the national team and win the World Cup. Pelé worked hard. The entire country celebrated when he helped Brazil win the World Cup. In addition to soccer, Pelé was a humanitarian. Little People Big Dreams is a great series of biographies for children. This was a suitable entrant to this series of inspiring life stories for the very young, with the sporting subject of one of the world's most famous footballers. The artwork is very bright, and suitably dynamic, and tells us there are a lot more pasty-white ginger people in Brazil than we ever thought possible. Still, equality and all that. It's the rags-to-riches story we come here for, though, and the idea that anybody anywhere can become the best at whatever they want to achieve, which is yet again the moral of this whole cycle of books.

Regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, he was among the most successful and popular sports figures of the 20th century. During his playing days, Pelé was for a period the best-paid athlete in the world. Vegara's text is rather simplistic, straightforward, and informative. It starts off with a young Pelé growing up poor in his neighborhood in Brazil with a ball made with a sock full of rags, but he believed that one day he would lead his country to win a World Cup. Backmatter includes a concise and informative biography timeline of Pelé's life. Rosa's illustrations are simplistic and colorful, but apropos to the target audience. The premise of the book is rather straightforward. It traces Pelé's life from his humble life of poverty with a homemade ball made from rags to a successful career as one of the preeminent footballers in the world. All in all, Pelé is a wonderful biography of a little boy who had a dream and worked hard to achieve his dreams and beyond to become one of the most notable footballers in the world.

I'm pretty sure Pele is the reason people in the U.S. knew anything about the game of football- even if we called it soccer. When I was a kid in the 70s, we all wanted to be like Pele- there's a reason he's known as the best player ever! It was amazing to watch him play, and you could see the joy on his face, that child inside who promised to win the World Cup one day for his father. Definitely an inspiring addition to this wonderful series! #Pele #NetGalley

I love reading about people from other cultures and countries who have a recognizable name, but where most people don’t know a lot about them. For me this is Pele. I knew he had something to do with Soccer. I love this story, and how the man never forgot his boyhood and used his sport for good rather than just to fill his pockets.

This is a inspirational biography of a great soccer player. I had never heard of Pele before this book, but it's obvious that he made an impact in soccer. I enjoyed hearing how he started playing soccer, and how young he was when he made it "big". The book also highlights his caring way for giving back to the community.

We loved this book! I grew up, learning to play football, and was inspired by Pele and his story. Years later, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book to my daughter, and tell her the beauty and inspiration behind Pele’s life and his actions. This is a wonderful book and one your children will love, whether they love sports or not. We also love the wonderful illustrations.
