Kenni is a six year boy who has just begun swimming lessons. He also has a witch who shows up at times when Kenni doesn't really want her around. Kenni is making little progress with his lessons and is about to quit. The witch shows up and encourages him to give up because he is making no progress. His swimming instructor gives his mom a magic seed that when watered is supposed to grow. The witch smirks as the seed appears not to grow. While the intention of the author to coach and inspire children to master new skills is an admirable one, there are some reasons why this book does not hit the mark. There are a few editing issues and the flow of text is a bit unnatural for a six year old child. The size of the font varies from page to page as do the size of the illustrations. The book is targeted for children ages four through eight. There is a lot of text on some of the pages for children at the lower end of that range. This author plans a series; I do believe a lot of these problems will be resolved as the series is further developed. Developing persistence and a sense of purpose is a skill worthwhile inculcating in our children.

This is not a children's book with a single "moral." It's a kid's book written to teach positive skills/traits (confidence, self-esteem, etc). The colorful illustrations and text work very well together. I've really enjoyed reading this to my daughter, and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a new positive bedtime story for their young children.
