I saw episodes of the video documentary of this epic challenge and wanted to read more of this amazing adventure and the interactions between to two men paddling their canoe around Iceland. It is in fact a two-man kayak called Inspiration and the book recounts the many desputes among the wider team of support vehicles and personel as well as the conflict of the two friends facing their own personal challenges while seeking to work as a team. It is in fact a two-man kayak called Inspiration and the book recounts the many desputes among the wider team of support vehicles and personel as well as the conflict of the two friends facing their own personal challenges while seeking to work as a team. The book is crammed with excellent still photographs which capture the force of the sea and scale of the challenge but it is the words of Riaan Manser that reveal the true struggle and the personal hell a lone adventurer had to undertake to share this experience with a less able person in ever sense of the word. In the process strange insights are given and it is hard to be judgemental like everyone else appears to have been, to his face, off to camera and behind his back. At times the book is hard to make progress through like some of the days spent at sea, however, it is a worthwhile read for its honesty and soundbites for enduring and overcoming great hardships and achieving the most difficult of challenges. For the conclusion you will reach whether you admire Manser in his journey is that without his belief, his vision, his money and his personal drive this adventure would never have happened, let alone suceed. For me that makes him a real hero and adventurer and worthy of our respect and to have risked all to assist someone else to intimately achieve something remarkable and life changing makes Manser that much more special as a person and a human being.

Good pics, good maps, but monotonous text about the extreme conditions of sea and weather during the journey. Manser has a rough time with his kayak partner Dan Skinstad (who has cerebral palsy) and his support crew. I think Manser should stick to solo expeditions in future - gotta be easier than this rather lunatic endeavour!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. The author tries to help and encourage a friend in his trek around Iceland, but his self analysis is the better story. Picked it up because I'm interested in Iceland, but it doesn't offer much about Iceland, actually.

An interesting read and to survive the elements amazing ! but the Dynamic of the team rendered the book less than inspirational.
